421 Harry Potter with Merelyn and Twentysomething

It's too late for Wizard Highschool, Wizard University, Wizard Master's School, etc, so we're here to provide you some Wizard's Continuing Education. Pru (whose relationship with HP is a tragedy) and MK (who found it wanting) are joined by ultra HP nerds Merelyn and Twentysomething to talk about one of the biggest fandoms of our time. What if Pottermore sorted you into the wrong house? Did anyone actually like that crappy epilogue? Will there be owls?????? You should follow us on Twitter.

This week as a special surprise, we've got a guest episode for you by Dione/KitsuneHeart, Kady/Shut-in-Princess, Dillon/EriDillon, and Robin/Robbel. We're not sure what the whole deal is with Homestuck, but that's what these four are going to try and explain to everyone.

419 Guardians of the Galaxy

Are you an asshole but not 100% a dick? Then you're in the right place. This week we're joined by two of our favourite assholes, Leupagus and Merelyn to have a spoiler-heavy discussion about Guardians of the Galaxy, from why the opening was weak and why that one line we all hate was dumb to why Groot is the best tree, just the best tree ever no for real don't even bother fighting us on this one and how much we loved this movie. By the way, in case you haven't heard? Groot is the best tree.

418 Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

Get your gold and pearl pocket handgun and your fanciest flapper dress, because this week we're going to con you into watching one of our favourite shows - Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. It turns out Australia has one-upped the entire world with an amazing tv show about ladies and murder and great clothes with a great ensemble cast, and this is the perfect time to get into it. So pour yourself a sidecar and settle in while we do our best to hook you without just sitting down and making you watch the first 20 minutes of the pilot.

417 Ask Us Anything B

The B side of our Ask Us Anything special is 90% Pru crying, interspersed with an extensive detour into Rule 63, food writing, Pacific Rim, the saddest parts of SPN, writing style questions, and Kate's love of scrotums. Yeah, we don't know, either. You should follow us on Twitter.

416 Ask Us Anything A

You guys had so many asks that we've had to make two whole episodes to contain them all! That's a lot of feels. So sit back, relax, and get ready for the first half of our season 4 Ask Us Anything extravaganza, covering just about every topic you can possibly imagine.

You should follow us on Twitter and on Tumblr.

415 How to Train Your Dragon 2

Get out your rain stick and shake it like a polaroid picture, because apparently that business controls Alpha Dragons. We set aside a whole hour this week to talk about how much we absolutely hated How To Train Your Dragon 2, how it goes completely against the first (amazing!) movie, and why you should absolutely not pay legal tender to see this movie. Spoilers ahoy, dragon pirates. We've got a lot of feelings about this one.

414 Supernatural Season Nine

Sharpen your angel blades and make sure you've located the most torturously painful spot on your body for us to give you the Mark of Cain, because Pru and Waldorph spent a long weekend destroying lobster and watching season nine of Supernatural like fucking champions. We talk the agonizing ambivalence we felt for the majority of the season, the crushing horror of realizing just as we thought we were getting out, they reel us back in. We speculate on what we want out of the next season, the likelihood any of it will happen (lol) and whether or not everybody will die again. Some more. Profound spoilers, like certain bonds, for all of Supernatural season nine. You should follow us on Twitter.

8 June 2014

413 Sailor Moon with Lianne Sentar

Get ready for a moon escalation, because Pru left MK alone with Lianne Sentar of Sparkler Monthly this week, and the only thing on their minds was Sailor Moon. We talk about the manga, the anime, the new anime, and the live action drama all in the context of the female gaze, matriarchies, and gender and sexual queerness. If you thought transporting yourself back in time to the Moon Kingdom was hard just wait until you hear about our dumb struggles against the limitations of the 90s and early 00s. Whether you're already a Sailor Moon fan or if you're looking to pick up the new series, this episode has a lot of feelings for you.

412 X-Men: Days of Future Past

It's time to get high on nasal decongestants and serums that fuck with your DNA, because Hoyden and Pru have congregated this very special week to talk about the latest, the probably not greatest, X-Men: Days of Futures Past. We discuss how the hell this movie managed to keep so many different threads clear, and whether or not the character arcs for our trio of leads worked, and if this movie course corrected on some of the more annoying paternalism from the first. Also, Wolverine's butt. So if you're ready for a spoiler heavy podcast with national treasure Hoyden tripping balls on cold medicine and holding up admirably the entire time, this is your time.

411 Spider-man 2

Break out your grain alcohol and sense of inevitable disappointment, because /report got Pru and Merelyn hammered and talking about The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Fair warning, tender listeners, we absolutely hated this movie and our hour+ dissertation on why we do is unwavering on this point, not even Andrew Garfield's doe eyes and jiggly backside or Emma Stone's dynamic brightness and fantastic hats could rescue our feelings. But if you want someone to commiserate, or hear stories about terrible life choices, the best leather seats at an AMC in New York, or our various "best parts of the movie" (none of which involved the movie), stick around.

410 A Brief History of Fandom

This week we're joined by special guest Flourish who helps Merelyn and MK explain 'the good ol'days' and why they were actually HORRIFYING but now fill old-school fandom with nostalgia. We're talking Zines, APAs, Usenet, BBS, LJ, the Pit, the Great Purge, and a million other things you'll have to look up on Fanlore afterwards. We even get Flourish to make the sound of a 14.4 dial up modem. It's serious.

409 Captain America and the Winter Soldier

Folks, our long national nightmare is over. It's time for /report's Captain America: Winter Soldier: Crying Gay Makeouts Brutal Face-punching episode. We talk about the massive universe reset, whether or not the movie title was a cruel misdirection, our continuing and unabated anger at one particular character, and how sad we are about Bucky Barnes. (Spoiler: Very sad.) This episode also contains spoilers for Marvel's Agents of SHIELD's latest episodes, so keep that in mind as you crank up the George Washington Rap and drop your mic to do some AMERICA.

407 CLAMP

Get ready to give up one of your eyeballs for someone you love, because this week we're joined by The Hoyden for a special episode all about mangaka circle CLAMP. We'll cover the highs and lows, from that dark, fucked up shit show that was x1999/Tokyo Babylon to the sugary sweetness of Cardcaptor Sakura. And yeah, we know: the ending of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles made no sense, but we'll try to apply some logic to it anyway. So settle in with some snacks and the biggest bottle of sake you can get your hands on because it's all fun and games until somebody murders your twin sister to show you how much they don't care about you.

In reality, that means we talk about dwarves, dwarves, dwarves, Sherlock Smaug, Pru undoubtedly earns herself some inevitable hatemail by talking about her dislike for "boy fiction," we chat forest elves, and have a lot of feelings about Lake Town. Join us as we ruminate over the finer points of a fandom that has brought us countless instances of gender confusion, mesmerizing bouts of pelvic thrusting, and an album with a visual concept that can be best described as "gay 70s porno". We will do our best to answer questions such as "Why is K-pop different from Western pop?", "How did five sparkly teenage boys bring all the noonas to the yard?", "How can dick pics be tactfully deployed to resolve fandom wars?" and "Seriously, what the fuck is a Shawol?" (Answer: Nothing good).
